Understanding Energy Burden

Energy burden is how much of a household's income goes toward energy-related costs. On average, U.S. households spend 2% to 3% of their income on energy. But for families earning less than 80% of their area’s median income, this can jump to 8.6%. In some areas of the Midwest, it can reach up to 30%. And we’ve seen even higher.

Freddie Mac reports that over half of U.S. homes are over 40 years old and located in minority or low-to-moderate income areas. The Midwest, in particular, has some of the oldest housing in the country, with many homes over a century old.

While resources are available for income-qualified households, navigating the complex network of assistance programs and managing daily life can be overwhelming. That’s where we come in.

Our Solution: ECO Reports

Our ECO Reports help households manage and reduce their energy costs. Our reports offer practical advice and point out resources that fit each household’s needs. With experience in the energy assistance framework and home energy analytics, we give clear, actionable steps to help you save on energy in the long-term.

We are currently open to Wisconsin and Michigan, with plans to expand to other parts of the Great Lakes region. Our mission is to make energy more affordable and fair for everyone. For more information, reach out to us by email or phone.
